‘Tis the season for giving, and with the holidays rapidly approaching, StarVista invites you to add some extra cheer to the lives of the children, youth, and families we serve. Now through Friday, December 14th, please consider donating a gift card to help one of our clients purchase a holiday gift or meal for their children and families. While we still warmly welcome direct toy and gift donations, providing recipients with gift cards gives them the gift of choice!
Through this year’s holiday drive, we honor our beloved, late colleague, Durand “Randy” Clark Yano, who launched StarVista’s first ever Holiday Gift Drive, now a favorite tradition amongst staff and clients.
In the early days of the holiday drive, Randy carried around paper and pen, as he made his rounds, taking gift requests and asking colleagues if they wanted to volunteer or donate. In those first years, he connected dozens of kids with gifts from staff and a handful of outside donors he knew. Randy paid attention to every small detail and took time to personally handwrite a gift tag for each and every present.
As the number of clients grew, so did the gift drive. Randy recruited his StarVista peers to help, and the project soon transitioned to an organized system of emails and spreadsheets. Soon, Randy was fulfilling over 250 requests, carefully matching each child with a gift from their wish list.
Driven by Randy’s compassion, the StarVista holiday drive has steadily grown over the last ten years. Randy always made sure the donations kept coming and that all the volunteers had what they needed to make it happen. Whenever it looked like StarVista might not have enough donations to help meet the need, Randy would personally reach out to friends and family to close the gap. He and his wife Debbie would frequently make special, last minute trips to the store to ensure all of the wishes were fulfilled.
It was as though Randy was part Santa and part elf, buzzing around and making sure everyone had their needs and wishes met. He took each challenge in stride, his eyes bright and his smile wide.
Now, more than 300 children and families are connected with generous gifts each year.
This year, StarVista is proud to honor Randy’s memory by hosting our Holiday Gift Drive in his name, as we make sure, just like he did, that our client families in need each receive something special this holiday season. We know he’d be proud to see his legacy of service and giving continue!
